Why practicing introspection is important for you?

You know pretty well which appetizers you like and which you don’t, but how do you feel about broader perspectives such as self-esteem; in order to have a whole picture of your inner self, you must look at where you actually lie and your stance about a variety of things. This may be explored through practicing introspection.

Introspection, self-observation, or self-contemplation are often used interchangeably to explain the complex process of closely observing one’s own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Introspection is often employed as an informal technique to explore an individual’s inner self and life. Introspection allows an individual to judge his own mental state. It has nothing to do with other sources of knowledge and information as an individual’s experience of mind is different than that of others.

Wilhelm Maximilian Wundt, a German physiologist, first introduced introspection as a structured and rigorous experimental technique to analyze one’s thoughts and feelings. This is why introspection is viewed as an informal self-contemplation technique as well as a formalized experimental technique, employed by psychologists of the structuralism school of thought.

“Wilhelm Wundt” in the late 1800s trained individuals about how to analyze the content of their own thoughts. Some researchers were of the view that he used the method of introspection as a structured and precise experimental technique in a highly controlled setting.  Wundt’s work finally leads to an emphasis on an individual’s perception and development of cognitive psychology.

The process that was employed in Wundt’s Research Lab was pretty different from typical introspection. In his research lab, he selected highly trained subjects as observers. These participants were exposed to carefully controlled sensory trials. Multiple observations were recorded. Participants were asked to be highly attentive to exposed stimuli. He also disclosed that feelings and sensations actually make up the human mind.

In order to understand the structure of the mind, it is essential to examine the processes of the mind so people were exposed to different stimuli around them. In a few cases, subjects were required to respond with “yes” or “no” answers. In other instances, subjects were asked to press the telegraph key to record their answers.

Edward B. Titchener, who was a student of Wundt, also credited for the structuralism school of thought, employed the same technique with few modifications. He emphasized breaking down mental processes into components.

A variety of mental states like sensory, cognitive, or emotional are assessed through the practice of introspection. During the last few decades, psychologists started to underestimate the wonders this practice may actually bring to the life of an individual considering it as an outdated phenomenon. But this technique allows people to discover their deep-seated values and beliefs. It also allows them to understand their own emotions, feelings, and behaviors across different situations with the help of professional guidance.

Introspection also strengthens your decision-making ability that in turn improves your self-fulfillment. It leads to relatively stronger interpersonal relationships. This technique paved a path to unveil one’s inner strengths that strengthen his thought processes.
